Since Ancient Egyptian times, Orthodontic type treatments have existed to straighten teeth and realign jaw-lines in order to achieve the perfect smile.
Egyptian Mummies have been found with cord on their teeth in an attempt to straighten them. Aulus Cornelius Celsus was a Roman who decided that applying pressure to the teeth would straighten them. This was achieved by applying pressure with the thumb. The Romans furthered their orthodontic treatment by fixing a ligature of wire to the teeth in an attempt to fill up gaps. The Ancient Greeks gave their dead orthodontic treatment in preparation for the afterlife. This all proves that orthodontic treatment existed as early as 1000 BC.
There have been many variations in the type of orthodontic treatment throughout the centuries, Most of them involve using devices that focus on straightening teeth with a horseshoe shaped object. The concept of braces didn’t come into play until the early 1900’s. When gold was the preferred material, which only the rich could afford, followed by silver and the very poor making do with wood and ivory. Then the really poor would just have to make do with wonky teeth. The 1970’s brought about improved orthodontic techniques. One being the use of dental glue to attach dental brackets to the teeth.
In the 1990’s two Stanford University Graduates, Zia Chishti and Kelsey Wirth, invented the concept of Invisaglin. It was invented after observing that their plastic retainers would straighten their teeth at night time. Even after they had moved during the day. Invisaglin invisible braces involves the production of a number of plastic retainers. Then, these are placed on the teeth in two week intervals. The Invisaglin method of treatment has really altered the way we straighten our teeth.
