How our Root Canal Treatment process works

If you require Root Canal Treatment for an injected or decayed tooth, then you need to get it treated quickly and efficiency before the problem escalates. Let us take you through the process now so you understand exactly what’s involved.
Initial check & diagnosis
We’ll get you in as quickly as possible to look at the problem and diagnose exactly what needs to be done in order to fix any issues that you currently have.
Temporary treatment and procedure
Initially, damaged and diseased pulp will be cleared away and the area cleaned and dryed, then we’ll close the opening in your tooth with a temporary filling, while you wait for the permanent crown.
Return visit to complete treatment
After a few weeks we’ll finish the treatment by placing a permanent crown or a similar type of restoration on the top of the tooth. Depending on the condition of your natural tooth, we may need to place a small supporting post inside of the root chamber, to make the crown or restoration more stable.
5 Stages of the Root Canal Treatment
Anaesthetic
First, a local anaesthetic is administered to ensure no discomfort during treatment.
Drilling
The tooth is prepared with a drill, allowing access to the root canal system.
Cleaning
The root canal system will be thoroughly cleaned out to remove all infection and pulp.
Temp. Sealing
The root canal system is then filled and sealed temporarily with a crown.
Perm. filled
The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled.

FAQ’s about Root Canal Treatment

Have a question about Root Canal Treatment? Chances are you’ll find the answer in our FAQ below.

What is root canal treatment?

A root canal treatment is a procedure to save a tooth that has become badly decayed and unhealthy. During the procedure, the infected tissue, or pulp, surrounding your tooth’s nerve is cleaned out so that there is no further damage done to your tooth.

Why is root canal treatment necessary?

The area where the nerve is located is in a narrow passage that’s called a root canal. When this area becomes infected, it can be extremely painful. And, this can cause serious health problems if the area is not repaired.

Often, the unhealthy area will become abscessed due to infection. Many times, this leads to excruciating pain, which leads patients to seek treatment in order to get relief.

What are the dangers of not having the treatment when you need it?

If you don’t have the procedure performed, you may lose the tooth. The decay and infection are likely to spread, and may even result in additional tooth decay.

If the problem is not remedied in time, you could lose teeth that are close to the original source. But, you may have been more severe issues than noticeable tooth decay, or tooth loss.

Once tooth infection begins to spread, it can travel to other area s in your body, wreaking havoc. In some cases, an abscessed root canal has led to brain damage or even death.

That’s why it’s imperative that you treat and resolve the infection as soon as you possibly can.

How long does the procedure take?

Most single root canals take less than one hour. Procedures involving multiple root canals last an average of fewer than two hours.

How long will I need to recover from the treatment?

After your root canal appointment, you may experience some discomfort and swelling. However, this usually subsides within 24 hours.

You may be sent home with prescriptions, such as antibiotics and in some cases, medication to help reduce pain.

At the time of your appointment, we’ll probably schedule a follow-up visit. If no complications are reported, you will return at that time.

It’s important to follow instructions that you may be given and keep in touch with your doctor if you experience any unexpected results.

Is the treatment safe?

Yes it’s very safe. Root Canal Treatment is successfully performed on millions of patients per year without any major complications or issues.

Will there be any lasting side-effects of the treatment or will it be noticable?

Other than possible minor swelling during the first twenty-four hours following your procedure, you shouldn’t expect any noticeable, physical signs to be present that would indicate you’ve had a root canal treatment.

How much does root canal treatment typically cost?

The cost can range from anything from a couple of hundred pounds up to many of thousands of pounds, depending on the exact state of your teeth and gums and their overall health, and therefore the specific nature and scope of the treatment that you require.
